Writing underpins all areas of the curriculum at East Bergholt Primary School.
We follow the CLUSP programme of study for writing ensuring that links with other areas of the curriculum are carefully thought out and meaningful.
CLUSP Writing draws on taught content from CUSP History, Geography and Science and from the depth study of core texts from the literature spine. Expert subject knowledge is carefully woven into each Writing module which gives teachers the opportunity to teach and rehearse key knowledge and skills before applying this learning to meaningful extended outcomes. The careful architecture of this curriculum ensures that pupils build on prior learning and maximise purposeful curriculum connections to become writers for life. Within the CUSP curriculum, punctuation and grammar is taught both directly and discreetly with pupils where necessary.
Spelling is taught in discrete sessions across the school building on the children’s success with Little Wandle phonics. The school follows CUSP spelling. The principles of which are; teaching of spelling concepts; pattern seeking; systematic revisiting; additional time given to complex concepts and common errors; spelling and word meaning intrinsically linked.
Handwriting is taught across key stage 2. We aim for all children to have a fluent, joined script by the end of year 4.
