Writing

Intent

  • To develop passionate, enthusiastic and creative writers
  • To ensure pupils have strong literacy skills to inform and express their abilities both through the spoken language and with the written word
  • To ensure that every child is inspired by different types of writing and can become a confident and enthusiastic writer

 

Implementation

The school follows the CUSP programme of study for writing ensuring that links with other areas of the curriculum are carefully thought out and meaningful.  Writing draws on content from History, Geography, Science and core texts from the literature spine.  Subject knowledge is carefully woven into each writing module so that teachers can teach and rehearse key knowledge and skills before applying this learning to meaningful extended outcomes.  The curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced so that pupils build on prior learning and maximise purposeful curriculum connections to become writers for life. 

 

Within the CUSP curriculum, punctuation and grammar is taught both directly and discreetly with pupils.  All writing lessons incorporate a grammar starter. 

 

Spelling is taught in discrete sessions across the school through the CUSP spelling programme.  The spelling curriculum ensures that pupils acquire deep knowledge about the English spelling system and that this learning endures.  CUSP spelling is a balanced approach, drawing together knowledge about phonics and vocabulary and pairing this with pattern seeking and reasoning.    

 

Handwriting is taught across key stage 2 so that all children have a fluent, joined script by the end of Year 4. 

 

Impact

Every child will achieve good to excellent progress, according to their individual needs.  Each child will leave East Bergholt CEVC Primary School as a happy, confident writer, who has the key skills and knowledge necessary for the next stage of their learning.
