    Pupil Librarians

At East Bergholt CEVC Primary School, reading lies at the heart of our curriculum and our commitment to enabling every child to flourish. Our Pupil Librarians are selected for their genuine love of reading, their sense of responsibility and their enthusiasm for inspiring others to discover the joy of books.

Rooted in our Christian vision — “I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10) — our Librarians play an important role in nurturing a culture where reading is valued, celebrated and accessible to all.

    Promoting a Love of Reading

Our Pupil Librarians actively encourage reading across the school by:

    • Modelling positive reading habits

    • Recommending books to their peers

    • Supporting younger pupils in choosing texts

    • Promoting respect for books and the library environment

Through this leadership role, pupils develop confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of service.

    Leadership, Responsibility and Stewardship

The Librarian team has responsibility for:

    • Organising and shelving books accurately

    • Maintaining a tidy and welcoming library space

    • Supporting other year groups during library visits

    • Acting as ambassadors for reading within the school

Mrs Hutchings provides comprehensive training, including:

    • Using the library computer system

    • Understanding and applying the Dewey Decimal Classification system

    • Learning how to care for and manage resources effectively

This training ensures that pupils develop independence, organisational skills and a clear understanding of how systems support learning.

    Impact

The work of our Pupil Librarians contributes to:

    • A calm, purposeful and well-organised library environment

    • Increased engagement in reading across the school

    • The development of leadership and character in our older pupils

    • A culture of respect, stewardship and shared responsibility

Through this role, pupils experience meaningful leadership that supports the quality of education and promotes a lifelong love of reading.
