At East Bergholt, we are proud to have a dedicated Forest School area on our school field, designed to inspire curiosity, resilience and a deep connection with the natural world.
Our Forest School space is thoughtfully equipped with a wide range of tools and resources to support exploration, creativity and skill development. From den-building materials and woodland tools to natural crafting resources and fire-lighting equipment (used safely and appropriately), children are given meaningful opportunities to learn through hands-on experience.
Forest School sessions are led by staff trained in Outdoor Learning, who continually develop their practice to ensure children experience high-quality, safe and inspiring sessions.
As outdoor learning advocate Marina Robb explains:
“Children need nature for the healthy development of their bodies and minds. Time outdoors nurtures imagination, resilience, confidence and wellbeing.”
We see this every time we step outside. Forest School supports children to:
Develop confidence and independence
Learn to assess and manage risk safely
Build resilience and perseverance
Strengthen teamwork and communication skills
Experience awe and wonder in the natural world
Improve wellbeing through fresh air, movement and exploration
Each class visits our Forest School area at least once every half term, allowing children to build their skills progressively over time. This regular rhythm ensures learning is not a one-off experience but part of a developing journey.
Whether constructing shelters, using tools, observing wildlife, or simply sitting quietly and noticing seasonal change, Forest School provides space for children to grow — socially, emotionally and physically — in ways that classroom learning alone cannot provide.
We believe that time outdoors is not an “extra” — it is an essential part of childhood.
