EYFS

Our curriculum is designed to recognise children’s prior learning, both from previous settings and their experiences at home. We work in partnership with parents, carers and other settings to provide the best possible start at East Bergholt Primary school by creating a positive transition, ensuring each individual reaches their full potential from their various starting points.

Our curriculum has been designed to enable children to succeed through our enabling environments and warm, skilful adult interactions support the children as they begin to link learning to their play and exploration right from the start. Our Early Years Curriculum has a central focus on developing our pupils’ vocabulary and language as well as placing a strong emphasis on building literacy skills and number sense. We offer our pupils a rich and diverse variety of opportunities which maximises the opportunities for meaningful cross-curricular links and learning experiences, as well as promoting the unique child by offering extended periods of play and sustained thinking.

Our Early Years and Year 1 children use Little Wandle to learn to become fluent readers. They are taught Phonics daily and have three reading practice sessions a week which focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension. Through each of these sessions, the children focus on specific elements of their reading helping to build the strong foundations needed to become a fluent life-long reader. To find out more about how we teach phonics at East Bergholt please visit the Phonics Curriculum page.
